Asian regional conference in the Philippines

CVICT presents a paper on how holistic rehabilitation and medico-legal investigation can complement each other in securing legal justice for torture victims at the Asian regional conference in the Philippines from 22-24 November 2011. The conference was organized by the Medical Action Group, Phillipines and the IRCT, Denmark. CVICT also stressed on how holistic rehabilitation alone (even when they don’t receive justice or compensations) helps to improve their health at least and make the torture victims function normally in society.

Two case studies were compared: 1) of a torture victim who received justice and 2) another torture victim who did not receive justice; and examine its link to collection of forensic evidence and holistic care. The case studies were linked to 55 victims who received compensation/ justice and improved health and 69 torture victims who didn't receive justice due to lack of forensic evidence but had improved health after
receiving holistic care.

Refresher training for community psychosocial worker

Five Days Refresher training for community psychosocial worker (CPSW) was organized by Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT, Nepal) from 5 – 9 September 2011 in Hotel Sweet dreams, Mahendra Nagar, Kanchanpur. There were 21 participants from different VDCs of Kanchanpur District in training. The major objective of this training is to enhance the knowledge and skills of the existing CPSWs of the district, so that they would be capable to implement the program more effectively at their respective VDCs. In collaborate with Ministry of Women, Children and Social welfare, Department of Women and Children, Women and Children Office. The program supported by United Nations population Fund

Refresher training

Refresher training for community psychosocial worker(CPSW) was organized by Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT, Nepal) from 22nd August to 26th August, 2011 at Hotel Shankar of Taulihawa kapilvastu,. There were 12 participants (5 female and 7 male) from 11 VDCs and one Municipality in training. The major objective of this training was to enhance the knowledge and skills of the existing CPSWs of the district, so that they would be capable to implement the program more effectively at their respective VDCs. Basic training on "psychosocial care and support" for IP’s of UNICEF

Basic training on " Psychosocial Care and Support” organized by Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT), Nepal starts from 10– 16 August 2011 in Kathmandu and supported by UNICEF . Twenty-nine Participants from Implementing Partners of UNICEF. The training focused on psychosocial problems and its identification and psychosocial care and support.

Interaction program on: International Day in support of victims of Torture (26 June 2011)

An interaction/discussion program was held in the Nepal Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) office, Hariharbhawan on 26th June, Sunday to mark 14th International Day Against Torture. The program was jointly organized by NHRC and in collaboration with Centre for VIctims of Torture, Neapla and others Human Rights Stakeholders working to combat torture including People from different walks of life (media, government, I/NGOs, police, armed force) that are working against torture participated in the program. Although torture cases have reduced to some extent in the post-conflict situation, it has not fully stopped yet. Hence, it is still a very challenging issue for the country. Thus, CVICT called for participation of various human rights organization to pressurize the Government to enact new legislation with criminalization of torture, ratification of Optional Protocol of Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) and to give reparation to the victims of torture for their rehabilitation.
